Applying to SPUUR
The 2027 SPUUR application process is open through February 15, 2027. The dates of the 10-week summer program in 2027 are Monday, May 24 through Friday, August 30. All activities are in-person. Students unable to begin the program on Monday, May 24 will not be considered. Similarly, students must commit to completing the entirety of the program, i.e., through Friday, August 30. Holidays are observed – students are not expected to report for research activities on Monday, May 31 and Friday, July 2. There are no other days off during the summer.
Qualifications
Any full-time student – domestic or international – enrolled at any US university or college in the spring semester is eligible to apply to the UW–Madison SPUUR. Preference will be given to Junior and Senior standing undergraduate students with scientific curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a serious interest in pursuing a PhD in a biomedical science field.
Students planning to apply to veterinary school, medical school, or to any other professional degree program (e.g., PharmD, DDM, DNP) will be considered based on their interest in research, but priority will be given to those expressly interested in careers in research.
Students must commit to full-time participation in the program from start to end. This means at least 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Applicants will be notified early-to-mid March.
The UW–Madison SPUUR program encourages students from ALL backgrounds to apply. This includes first-generation college students, those who have a background of overcoming disadvantage, and those residing in areas where undergraduate research opportunities are not particularly available.
